Cold plunges, scored
You want water that is actually cold without hauling bags of ice every morning, and you want to know what it will cost to run. Start with the chiller column, the unit that holds the water cold on its own. That is the honest line here: an ice-only tub is not a self-chilling plunge, so we cap its cooling score, and we surface the electricity brands leave off the box. The list is ranked by composite.

How we score cold plunges
Here is the first thing to know, because it decides everything else: "cold plunge" covers two different products. One has a built-in chiller, the unit that holds the water at a set temperature for you, day after day. The other is just a tub you fill with ice. We score both on the same rubric, but we cap the cooling dimension for ice-only tubs, because on their own they cannot hold a temperature once the ice melts. That is why an insulated barrel can rank well below a self-chilling unit even when it is beautifully built. It is not worse - it is a different kind of product, and you should know which one you are buying.
Cooling is not the whole story. We also surface the running cost, the electricity it takes to keep the water cold, which brands leave off the box - we list the chiller's estimated annual electricity right in the table. And we weight water care (ozone, UV, filtration) because a self-chilling unit reuses the same water for weeks, so you want to know what is keeping it clean. Value is scored on that running cost against the class median, not just the sticker price you pay once. See the methodology and the chiller-vs-ice guide. Putting one outside? The backyard recovery station guide plans the slab, electrical, and drainage around these running-cost figures.
